WHAT HAPPENED: Gillen Washington was diagnosed with an immunodeficiency disease in 2011 and has been receiving expensive medication to treat it since then. In 2014, Aetna denied Washington treatment, which caused Washington’s condition to worsen. Washington and Aetna have been involved in a legal battle ever since.
WHY IT MATTERS: As health care costs rise in the United States, medication and care are becoming less affordable and insurers are denying care or refusing to cover some conditions. This month, Blue Cross/Blue Shield said they will begin reviewing Emergency Room claims to determine whether or not the patient’s condition was truly an emergency situation.
